Opening Reception of the VIGS Institute

The Vienna Institute for Global Studies (VIGS) held its official opening reception on 17th October at SO/ Vienna in Vienna, Austria. The event marked the launch of this research center, dedicated to addressing global challenges through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates entrepreneurial ecosystems, international relations, and wellbeing & stress.

Naomi Besedes, Deputy Director of VIGS, welcomed the attendees and introduced the Institute’s vision, drawing inspiration from the methodologies of the Santa Fe Institute and the RAND Corporation. She emphasized Vienna’s historical role as a center of intellectual progress, making it a fitting home for VIGS Institute.

The evening featured keynote addresses by:

  • Prof. Dr. Zoltan Acs, Director of VIGS, who shared his personal journey and the motivation behind founding the Institute. He spoke about the importance of the entrepreneurship and collaboration in addressing complex global challenges.
  • Prof. Dr. Hilton Root, Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University, who reflected on the need for interdisciplinary research to tackle challenges such as global cooperation and social progress.

Throughout the event, discussions revolved around the Institute’s three focus areas:

  1. Entrepreneurial Ecosystems – Exploring the role of innovation and business networks in shaping economic growth.
  2. International Relations – Addressing the challenges of global cooperation and trust-building.
  3. Wellbeing & Stress – Investigating solutions for healthier lifestyles and mental resilience.

The event attracted over 100 participants from more than 15 countries, including policymakers, researchers, academics, and industry leaders. The evening provided an opportunity for panel discussions and roundtable conversations, allowing attendees to engage in in-depth exchanges on the Institute’s research areas.

A Q&A session followed, giving participants the chance to interact directly with the speakers, ask questions, and share perspectives. The event fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas among experts from diverse fields, reinforcing the relevance and importance of VIGS’ mission.

Afterwards, attendees had the opportunity to network with each other while enjoying finger foods and drinks, engaging in further discussions and exchanging ideas. The opening event was a successful milestone for the VIGS Institute, raising awareness of its mission and laying a strong foundation for future collaborations and contributions to research and policy.
